G321 Thriller Research - The Third Man Case Study "Explain how Carol Reed uses, develops and challenges thriller generic conventions in this iconic noir thriller".
Please post under G321 Thriller Research - I nearly missed this!
Your case study indicates proficient understanding of the conventions of thriller films.
Slide 5: Revise: Carol Reed decided to film the Third Man in black and white in order to achieve a specific look and to inject the mise-en-scene with a sense of darkness and illusion.
Though tinting of films was used as a special effect in early films the first colour motion pictures were in 1939 and that year saw two major films released with the new process: 'Gone With the Wind' and 'The Wizard of Oz'. The Third Man was released in 1946. You may wish to do a little research on this.
From Wikipedia: The atmospheric use of black-and-white expressionist cinematography by Robert Krasker, with harsh lighting and distorted "Dutch angle" camera angles, is a key feature of The Third Man. Combined with the unique theme music, seedy locations and acclaimed performances from the cast, the style evokes the atmosphere of an exhausted, cynical, post-war Vienna at the start of the Cold War.
Note that the costume depicts the dress code of the 1940's. This style of costume is used in later films such as "LA Confidential", The Godfather trilogy, "Once Upon a Time in America" to indicate the genre and to pay tribute to The Third Man.
I thought this information will be of help when constructing question 1 of your evaluation particularly as your own production includes conventions of film noir.
